The library is housed in one of the most beautiful buildings of Molyvos, in the center of the old market, and has around 20.000 volumes of printed and audio-visual material. It has been operating since 1859, the year of its foundation, as a lending library, as a reading room and as a center of knowledge and culture of the local community. Its old section includes many important old editions and book collections (ancient Greek authors of editions of Leipzig, editions of the famous printers: Patriarchate of Constantinople, Bucharest, Nicolaou Glyky of Venice, etc.) It also has archival material, minutes and documents of democracies and associations, in which the activity and history of the society of Mithymna are recorded, as well as part of the Archive of Argyris Eftaliotis and memorabilia of Stratis Myrivilis.
Through the collaborations with the local community, the Municipal Community of Mithymna, the University of the Aegean and the educational units of the region, it aspires to be a living cell of learning and culture, while through the Information Center it contributes to the contact and familiarization of users with new technologies. One of the main objectives of the Library is the digitization, documentation and promotion of both the Old Collection and the rare documents it possesses, in order to more effectively serve the citizens, researchers, students of the Greek and international University community (University of the Aegean, summer departments of Canadian and Norwegian Universities), the students and teachers of the wider region and beyond.
