The press in Lesvos, both before and after the liberation of the island in 1912, was a guide of the spiritual and cultural movement of the island, inspiring and supporting the local society. Through the columns of newspapers and magazines were published political news from the domestic and international news bulletin, letters and reports of rural residents of the island, vignettes, social comments and literary texts of some of the most prominent Greek novelists/ writers.
The Collection of the Library includes sheets of newspapers and magazins of both Lesvos, Asia Minor and Constantinople, some of which are unique, as for example the Newspaper Efedros. Also important for the region of Mithymna with many historical, political and cultural news, as well as information about everyday life in the area, was the local newspaper Mithymna, which was published in Mithymna.
Many of the newspaper issues have been digitized and documented in the framework of the Digital Herodotus programme and are now accessible to every reader, through the Digital Library https://dspace.cplm.gr, «DIGITAL HERODOTUS».
