Legal status – Administration

The Library of Mithymni became Public in 1957 with sub no. Official Gazette 78, vol. B, 07‐03‐1957.

In 2009, with the Official Gazette 787, vol.B’, 29‐04‐2009, it is characterized as Historical, while with the sub no. 92228/IZ decision of the Minister of Education, Government Gazette 1579, vol.B’, 31‐07‐2009, the name “Argyris Eftaliotis” is added to its name.

The Public Historical Library of Mithymni “Argyris Eftaliotis” is a Legal Staff of Public Law and belongs to the Director ate of Libraries and General Archives of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs . The operation of the Library is governed by the provisions of Law 3149/2003 (Government Gazette/A/141/10.6.2003) National Library of Greece, Public Libraries and other provisions and by the Regulations for the Operation of Public Libraries (Government Gazette 1173, vol. B’ , 20‐08‐2003). The Library operates at Department level and is managed by the Ephorate Council and the Head of the Library. The Ephorate Council is defined by decision of the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, and consists of five people who reside in the heatquarters or an area covered by the Library and come from the field of education, culture, local government, etc. The term of office of the Ephorate Council lasts three years and is unpaid.

Mission & Objectives

The Public Historical Library of Mithymna “Argyris Eftaliotis” as provided by the Library Operation Regulations:

  • Acts as a local information center, ensuring users access to all kinds of knowledge and information.
  • Promotes knowledge, information, education and culture without political, religious, racial or other discrimination.
  • Enhances readability and any kind of educational and cultural activity.
  • It is a place of acquaintance and familiarization with books.
  • Provides special services and materials to any users who cannot for any reason, use the usual  services and existing library material, such as foreign language minorities or people with special needs.

The Public Historical Library of Mithimna “Argyris Eftaliotis” aims to:

  • Preserve, highlight and promote the history and the culture of the region of Mithymna and Lesvos in general, but also of Hellenism of Asia Minor.
  • To support the educational process.
  • To promote the study and dissemination of books to all age and social groups.
  • To bring in contact and familiarize users with new technologies.

Partnerships

In order to achieve its goals, the Library promotes cooperation with:

  • The Municipality of West Lesvos, Municipal Unit of Mithymna.
  • Schools of all levels of the area of Mithymna, but also of the entire island
  • The University of the Aegean.
  • Universities abroad.
  • Volunteers for the occasional realization of free seminars, of various thematic categories.
  • Volunteers, who helped in the past to record new items of the Library but also to serve users.
  • Local Associations ‐ Foundations ‐ organizations
  • The Molyvos tourism association
